We are the World – 30주년

30년전 미국의 한 녹음 스튜디오에서는 말도 안되는 일이 일어났다. 미국의 내놓으라는 가수들이 한자리에 모여 녹음을 한 것이다. 1985년 1월 28일 로스앤젤레스의 A & M 레코딩 스튜디오에서 미국의 팝스타 45명이 모였다. “USA For Africa” 라는 단체를 결성하여 아프리카 난민을 위한 자선 기금 마련을 위한 노래를 만들었다. 마이클 잭슨과 라이오넬 리치 작사 작곡인 이 곡은 10여 시간이란 긴 시간의 철야 강행으로 녹음한 작품이다. 이 모든 과정을 담은 영상이 53분짜로 만들어져 있어 유트브에 올라와 있다. 이 노래는 85년 4월 3일부터 4주간 정상을 지켰고, 세계적으로 2,000만 장 이상이 팔려나가 2억 달러를 모금한 기록을 세웠다.

인류애를 전 세계에 보여준 역사적인 작품이 되었던 것이다. 45명의 최정상의 가수들이 모였다는 것 자체로도 놀라운 사건이지었지만, 이들이 밤을 새워가며 녹음함으로서 그 영향력이 지구촌 전체에 미칠 수 있었던 경이로운 일이었다. 이 곡을 작업하기 위한 프로듀서는 퀸시 존스와 마이클 오마션이 맡았고, 참여한 가수로는 솔로부분에 참여한 사람은 라이오넬 리치, 스티비 원더, 폴 사이먼, 케니 로져스, 제임스 잉그램, 티나 터너, 빌리 조엘, 마이클 잭슨, 다이에나 로스, 디온 워윅, 윌리 넬슨,  알 자로우, 브루스 스프링스틴, 케니 로긴스, 스티브 페리, 대릴 홀, 휴이 루이스, 신디 로퍼, 킴 칸스, 밥 딜런, 레이 찰스 등이고, 그 밖에 코러스 참여한 가수는 스모키 로빈, 헤리 벨라폰테, 밥 겔도프, 포인터 시스터스 등이다.
